How to deal with tight hospital spaces while maintaining high levels of precision
STARTING REQUIREMENT

Automate the transport of test tubes on horizontal and vertical routes, making use of the existing 1.5-metre deep elevator. In detail, it was required to adapt its mobile robots to specific and compatible dimensions, creating a high-tech vehicle for the automation of the prestigious Italian testing laboratory.

SOLUTION PROVIDED

The Unique Metropolitan Laboratory at the Maggiore Hospital of Bologna is Italy’s leading testing lab in terms of volumes managed and technological and organisational innovation, as well as one of the biggest and most prestigious labs in Europe. Required to manage around 78,000 test tubes a day, the lab requested an ad hoc mobile robot like the Oppent ECART model 6 to connect reception with the Haematology and Pre-Analysis areas. The length of the vehicle was customised for this project to ensure its compatibility with the size of the hospital’s existing elevator. In fact, a special version of the vehicle was delivered, Oppent demonstrating its engineering excellence to meet the needs of the lab with a 1250mm x 602mm x 352mm vehicle that was 70 kg lighter than other models in the ECART family. The mobile robot is equipped with an advanced natural navigation system, with bidirectional kinematics, making it suitable for use in tight spaces thanks to its exceptional levels of accuracy; this meant there was no need to install fixed references on the walls or floors and therefore that the spaces along the routes are not disturbed by maintenance activities.

AIMS
  1. Move 3 wardrobes of a volume of 400 litres around 35 times a day, inside a 3-storey building
  2. Create a high-tech vehicle compatible with the reduced dimensions of the hospital elevator
